How do I send a shout?

First, open Shhout! (duh). Then flip your phone upside down so that the home button is on top. A big dot will appear on screen. Press and hold that big dot and just start talking. As soon as you release your shout is sent to all your friends. There’s no pausing once you’ve started and no do-overs! Every shout is limited to 12 seconds, make ‘em count.

What happens to my shout?

When you send a shout, all your Facebook friends that also have Shhout! will get it. They have 12 hours to listen before it gets deleted forever.

How do I know if I have new shout?

When you open Shhout!, new shouts appear as a small dot at the bottom of your screen. The number in the dot lets you know how many new shouts you have. Just tap the dot to play your shouts. If you see a gear icon and a drawing of phone flipping back and forth that means there’s nothing new to listen to. Also, if you have notifications enabled you should get an alert anytime someone sends you a shout. Remember, shouts disappear after 12 hours, so we totally recommend enabling notifications.

Is Shhout! really anonymous?

Sorta. When you send a shout it’s just the audio, no names or profile pictures are shared with it. So it’s as anonymous as your voice.

When are shouts deleted?

You can only open a shout once. Shouts loop, so you can listen to them over and over, but once you close it the shout is deleted from your phone. All shouts are completely deleted from our servers after 12 hours, no matter what. So listen quick! Remember, that doesn’t stop someone from recording your shout with another recording device while it’s playing.

How do I add friends?

Shhout! syncs with your Facebook friend list. So anyone you are friends with on Facebook will automatically get your shouts. Since we don’t store any of your Facebook info there may be a slight delay between a friend joining Shhout! and them receiving your shouts. You can speed up the process by restarting Shhout! entirely (double tap your iPhone’s home button and then swipe Shhout! away).

How do I delete friends?

If you don’t want to hear someone’s shouts, you can block them on Shhout! by hitting the little ‘…’ button when their shout is playing. Remember, they will still be able to hear you shout. Since Shhout! uses Facebook, the only way to delete a friend entirely (so they won’t hear your shouts and you won’t hear theirs) is to un-friend that person on Facebook.

Shhout! is our first Cord Project, little experiments that pop up while we’re working on our primary focus, Cord. We’re interested in how voice messaging intersects with the latest technology and trends and making simple apps like Shhout! let us share some of our crazier ideas out in the open. In the long run, the things we learn from Shhout! and other Cord Projects will help us make Cord even better.
